SIA introduces mandatory refresher training and updated licence requirements

The Security Industry Authority (SIA) has introduced new training requirements for security professionals applying for or renewing licences.

Refresher training is now mandatory for door supervisors and security guards when renewing their licences (from 1 April 2025) and for close protection operatives from 1 April 2026.

The changes also strengthen first aid requirements. Door supervisors and security guards must hold a valid Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification, or equivalent, before undertaking training, while close protection operatives must hold a Level 3 first aid qualification or higher.

According to the SIA, the updated framework is designed to ensure licence holders remain equipped to meet modern security challenges, maintain professional standards and protect the public.
