Weston Super Mare - Late Night Levy

The Licensing Authority for North Somerset Council has confirmed that it will not introduce a Late Night Levy to cover the area of Weston Super Mare. The Licensing Authority in conjunction with the Council appears to have taken a broad review of the situation. In a press release they acknowledged that there are a number of problematic pubs and clubs within Weston Super Mare, however, having costed the return from the Levy, taking into account the provision of sensible exemptions for a seaside resort and following consultation with Andy Johnson (Head of Alcohol at the Home Office) they felt that the ends would not justify the means.

A Council spokesman confirmed that the Council sought to stimulate the Local Economy and valued the Purple Flag accreditation awarded to Weston Super Mare last month for its vibrant night life. It would appear that Andy Johnson, during his visit to Weston Super Mare, met with the Night Time Economy Steering Group which was applauded by him for its work.

It would appear that the Licensing Authority will now focus their attention upon the few problematic venues and look to promote the Night Time Economy.
