As one of the most popular destinations to visit in London, Westminster sees thousands of people take advantage of its bustling nightlife.

Westminster City Council has recently launched its ‘It’s Her City Too’ campaign centring around stopping sexual harassment, improving safety and perceptions of safety for all women utilising the evening and night-time economy. The scheme is supported by the Metropolitan Police Service and the Heart of London Business Alliance.

The campaign encourages everyone to play their part in stopping sexual harassment and taking responsibility for everyone’s safety. Whilst harassment can take on many forms, some more obvious than others, the campaign seeks to educate people on the signs of what to look out, what can be done about and challenging behaviours when safe to do so. Online training is available through the Suzy Lamplugh Trust on Bystander Interventions and is open to anyone.

Alongside the promotional element of the campaign, Westminster have a team of ‘Night Stars’ volunteers who focus on working within and around the West End to promote women’s safety and reduce violence against women and girls. The Night Stars operate in teams and provide assistance and support to women and those in need or who are vulnerable due to intoxication.

This is a positive step forward to bring women who live, work, visit and study in Westminster to be able to enjoy and feel safer on a night out. More information on the scheme and campaign can be found here.
