Wales - Minimum Pricing

23 Oct
2017

It is being widely reported this morning that Ministers of the Welsh National Assembly plan to introduce legislation to introduce a minimum price per unit of alcohol.  The proposed unit price is reportedly 50p, the same as proposed in Scotland.

This measure will be undertaken under their devolved powers for Health, as in Scotland, and follows a consultation on the issue which closed in 2015.

The attempts to introduce a minimum price in Scotland has been delayed following litigation by Scotch Whisky Association and others.  The long running case has been litigated up to the Supreme Court;  we are currently awaiting a decision from the Court following a hearing in July.

We shall keep you updated on the progress of both.
