Towers Hamlets Late Night Levy - new consultation launched

Further to our recent news that Towers Hamlets proposed Late Night Levy had been successfully challenged, we can confirm that the Council has re-launched its consultation about its introduction.

The consultation period expires on 23 August 2017 and it is proposed that if adopted the Levy will come into effect on 1 January 2018.

Those who made representations to the previous consultation are reminded that they will need to respond to this new consultation.

A summary of what is intended follows:

  • The Council proposes the late night supply period will begin at 00:00 hours and end at 06:00 hours.
  • The Council proposes to exempt the following permitted categories of premises from paying the levy as defined in the Late Night Levy (Expenses, Exemptions and Reductions) Regulations 2012:
    • Premises with overnight accommodation, where alcohol can only be supplied to persons staying at the premises for consumption on the premises,
    • Theatres and cinemas,
    • Bingo Halls,
    • Community Amateur Sports Clubs,
    • Community premises,
    • New Year’s Day (i.e. 1 January) premises only (this relates to premises which are authorised to supply/sell alcohol between 00:00 hours and 06:00 hours, ONLY on New Year's Day).
  • The Council has decided that a reduction of 30% will be granted to premises that achieved accreditation in the Best Bar None (BBN) Scheme, which is a business led best practice scheme as defined in regulations 5 (1) (a) and 5 (4) of the above Expenses, Exemptions and Reductions Regulations.
  • The Council is not proposing to apply any other exemptions or reductions.
