Sections 165 and 167 of the Equality Act 2010 fully come into force on the 6th April 2017.  This will make it a criminal offence for drivers of designated taxi and private hire vehicles to refuse to carry passengers in wheelchairs, to fail to provide them with appropriate assistance, or to charge them extra.

Guidance on the implementation has been published and can be found here: 'Statutory guidance: Access for wheelchair users to taxis and private hire vehicles'.

The guidance document seeks to provide advice on maintaining lists of vehicles designated as wheelchair accessible, handling applications from drivers for exemption from the requirements, and on transitioning from existing arrangements to those covered by the Equality Act.

Law correct at the date of publication.
