Meet the Team: Charlotte Gibson

Q: Tell us a little about what you do at JG&P?
A: I'm an Associate Partner at JG&P, advising clients on a wide range of licensing matters. My work includes helping businesses obtain new premises licences, securing variations to existing licences, and navigate gaming-related issues. No two days are ever quite the same, which is one of the things I enjoy most about the role.

I have the opportunity to work with a diverse range of clients, from large national operators and well-known brands to independent businesses and start-ups taking their first steps. Having started my career at JG&P as a paralegal, I later qualified as a solicitor before moving to a large global law firm, where I advised on all aspects of licensing law. Returning to JG&P has allowed me to combine my broader experience with the specialist, client-focused approach that JG&P does so well.

My career has given me experience across the full spectrum of licensing work, from day-to-day operational advice and compliance matters through to complex licensing applications, hearings, and corporate transactions. I enjoy helping clients find practical, commercially focused solutions and supporting them as their business develops.

Q: What do you enjoy most about working in licensing law?
A: Licensing is a really varied area of law that combines legal knowledge with practical, commercial solutions. I enjoy helping clients navigate complex regulations and finding ways to achieve their objectives while staying compliant. Every client, business and project is different, which means there are always a new challenges to work through.

It's rewarding to see businesses grow and succeed with our support. I particularly like supporting new ventures and seeing the plan come to life.

One of the aspects I enjoy most is supporting businesses at key stages of their journey. Whether it's helping a new business secure its first premises licence, guiding an operator through a significant expansion, or advising on a complex licensing issue, it's satisfying to play a crucial part. I particularly enjoy working with new operators and seeing a concept develop into a successful business.

Licensing also offers the opportunity to build long-term relationships with clients. Rather than advising on a single one-off transaction, we often support businesses through multiple matters, helping them overcome challenges, adapt to changing requirements and to expand. It is really rewarding to see a client grow and come up with innovative ideas, knowing that our advice has contributed to their success.

Q: What's been the most interesting part of your career so far?
A: The variety of clients and sectors I've worked with. From hospitality venues and universities to gaming operators and sports stadia businesses, every matter brings a new challenge and an opportunity to learn something different. It has also been really rewarding to reconnect with colleagues and clients that I haven't spoken to for a number of years but who are still familiar faces. Having started my career at JG&P, before moving to a large global law firm, and then returning, I've had the chance to see long standing professional relationships grow and develop over time. Re-establishing those connections and continuing to support clients at different stages of their journey has been a particularly enjoyable and unexpected part of returning to the firm.

Q: If you could describe licensing law in three words, what would they be?
A: Dynamic, challenging and rewarding.

Q: Finally, what's your drink of choice?
A: I’m currently very invested in the chicken wine hype!
