A special health summit  looking at the effects of Alcohol is due to take place in Liverpool today.

Liverpool Council will meet with Public Health officials, the NHS and Alcohol Charities to discuss a plan for Alcohol in the City. One of the main discussion points is minimum unit pricing:

Dr Richard Piper, chief executive of Alcohol Research UK, who is at the event told the Liverpool Echo the introduction of a minimum unit price is an “important and effective step in addressing the harms caused by alcohol.”

He said: “Scotland and Wales are leading the way with the introduction of the measure later this year and there are signs that Northern Ireland will be pursuing it too.

“It’s vital that England steps up so that the people of Liverpool and elsewhere can be protected from the huge harms that the very cheapest, high strength products cause.

We will note any developments or further statements from the council in reaction to the summit’s debate.
