Late Night Levy - Tower Hamlets - reminder

Further to our previous news on this subject, a reminder that Tower Hamlets is still consulting on the possible introduction of a Late Night Levy.

The consultation which was launched in February runs until Sunday 15 May and, subject to some limited exceptions, will affect all premises authorised to trade after midnight.

As is the case for all levies, the amount of a Levy payable is rateable value dependant as below:

Rateable Value

Annual Levy

Band A
(Nil - £4,300)

£299

Band B
(£4,301-£33,000)

£768

Band C
(£33,001-£87,000)

£1,259

Band D
(£87,001-£125,000)

£1,365* (£2,730)

Band E
(£125,001 and above)

£1,493* (£4,440)

*Those that are band D or E where the main use is the sale of alcohol for consumption on the premises will pay an additional fee.

The proposals appear to exempt the following premises from the levy:

  • Premises with overnight accommodation (if alcohol is served to overnight guests only)
  • Theatre and cinemas (if alcohol is served to ticket holders to events only)
  • Bingo Halls
  • Community Amateur Sports Club
  • Community Premises
  • Country Village Pubs (not a common type of premises in Tower Hamlets, from our knowledge)
  • Business Improvement Districts (BIDs)

Also, there would be a general exemption for New Year’s Eve and a potential reduction on the levy for premises participating in the Best Bar none Scheme.

Affected operators can respond by completing an on-line survey here - online survey  Alternatively, responses can be by email to: licensing@towerhamlets.gov.uk or by post.

Law correct at the date of publication.
