2018

Unusually, Christmas this year is again falling on 25th December to be followed on 26th December by Boxing Day (do you know the derivation of “Boxing Day” - see below)!

We confirm that our office will be closed from 12 noon on 24th December but will then be open for limited service from 8.45 am on 28th & 31st December.

The office will fully re-open on Wednesday, 2nd January, 2018.

Throughout the festive period our 24 hour “emergency helpline” will be operational and available – 0114 2663400.

Boxing Day – there are various competing theories for the origins of the term “Boxing Day”.  The Oxford English dictionary gives the earliest attestation of the term dating back to the 1830’s defining it as the “first week day after Christmas Day” observed as a holiday on which postmen, errand boys and servants of various kinds expect to receive a “Christmas box”.

Samuel Pepys made reference to “Christmas boxes” of money or presents on the first week day after Christmas as thanks for good service throughout the year in a diary entry for 19th December 1663.  So now you know!
