Further operating hours relaxation for remaining World Cup Games

Yesterday further legislation was laid before Parliament and approved to cover off the possibility of inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances during the final games.

It only applies for England match which is delayed.

Under The Licensing Act 2003 (FIFA World Cup Licensing Hours) (Amendment) (No. 2) Order 2026, the permitted hours for the sale of alcohol (and late-night refreshment) are extended until 30 minutes after the conclusion of the match, or 12 noon the following day, whichever is earlier.

The extension applies automatically to premises that hold a Premises Licence authorising the sale of alcohol for consumption on the premises until at least 11pm on the evening of the England game on Wednesday 15 July and the third/fourth place final on Saturday 18 July if England lose the semi-final.

If England reach the Final on Sunday 19 July, the extension applies automatically to premises that hold a Premises Licence authorising the sale of alcohol for consumption on the premises until at least 10pm on that day.

This amendment ensures that premises can continue to benefit from the temporary licensing hour extensions even where an England match starts later than scheduled due to circumstances beyond organisers' control.

Law correct at the date of publication.
