Digital ID - the ever changing position

We have previously reported on the possibility of digital ID for age verification, however the position becomes ever more complicated and uncertain as the Prime Minister has now stated that digital ID for purposes of proof of right to work in the UK is not to be mandatory.

The hope for hospitality was that a mandatory system would have helped create the platform for use of digital ID for age verification and overtaken the current consultation and sandbox which has been ongoing for sometime.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander told BBC Radio 4's Today programme-

"The digital ID could be one way in which you prove your eligibility to work through a digital right to work check,"

"At the moment we've got a paper-based system - there's no proper records kept.

"It makes it very difficult then to target enforcement action sensibly against businesses that are employing illegal workers."

We will continue to update on developments which may assist operators.
