Cheltenham first Council to reverse LNL

27 Feb
2017

On Friday evening the full council of Cheltenham met and decided to abolish the Late Night Levy (LNL) which they had adopted in 2014.

Cheltenham is the first council to abolish the LNL.

It would appear that there were 2 material factors in the decision to do so, first the LNL had not generated the monies predicted when voted in and secondly the council consider the existing Business Improvement District (BID) to be far more beneficial to the area.

This is, of course,  welcome news but the legislation will leave some Cheltenham operators with a further cost. Those operators, who took advantage of the free of application fee minor to reduce their hours so as to avoid the LNL, have no equivalent offer to take up to reinstate their hours. The LNL will cease on the 1st April 2017.

Law correct at the date of publication.
