Refresher Training

In Scotland, Personal Licence holders have an ongoing requirement for additional training.  As well as obtaining your Scottish Certificate for Personal Licence Holders (SCPLH) which allows you to apply for your licence in the first instance, within 5 years personal licence holders must complete refresher training.

The refresher training consists of a half day course followed by a multiple-choice exam.

Personal licence holders must provide to the Board who issued their licence proof of the refresher training within 3 months of the fifth anniversary of the grant of their licence.  As an example, if your licence was granted on the 1st March 2015 you must complete the refresher training before the end of February 2020 and notify the Board no later than the 31st May 2020.

The Boards are required to revoke the licence for any personal licence holder who does not comply with these requirements.  Thousands of licences have been revoked in the past for non-compliance.

Originally, licence holders who had their licences forfeited for this reason faced waiting 5 years before being allowed to reapply. Following changes to the law in August 2015 Personal Licence holders are now able to re-apply for their licence immediately and there is no longer a required to wait 5 years.
