The Smoking Ban- Initial Statistics

As you may be aware, ‘Smokefree England’ is monitoring and publishing compliance data for the first year of implementation of the English smoking ban.
Compliance figures for August 2007 have recently been published and a link to the publication page is given below.
94% of Licensing Authorities have provided statistics and from these the following figures have been released…
61,884 English premises were visited in August 2007 of which 98.7% were compliant in terms of non-smoking and 87.6% compliant in terms of signage.

Taken over the two months since implementation of the ‘ban’ these figures are 97.8% and 83.3% respectively.

During August 2007 there were 240 written warnings in respect of failure to prevent smoking and one court hearing, the latter presumably being the Blackpool case which has achieved some notoriety.
- Over the same two month period 552 written warnings have been issued. Similar figures in respect of signage were 1318 and 4416.
- During August 2007, 67 written warnings were issued to individuals for smoking in a smoke free area, 36 fixed penalty notices were issued and there were two reported court hearings. Over the two month period these statistics were 156/40/2.
