Guide To Managing Safety in Bars, Pubs and Clubs

September 07

In August 2007, the British Beer And Pub Association, in conjunction with BEDA, have issued a guide to the trade, entitled Managing Safety in Bars, Pubs and Clubs.

This document provides useful background information on the risks of violence and disorder in licensed premises, and how to prepare for that risk, and minimise it using good practice.

The guide prompts licensed premises to identify factors within their establishment which may trigger violence, and once these have been identified, adopt preventative measures that can be taken to minimise that risk.

The Guide contains an example of a risk assessment that Licensees may find useful as a starting point, and gives advice on when and how often to update the assessment.

In many cases premises will have already implemented a range of measures to prevent or deal with violence and disorder, but these measures are not always formally recorded.

We see this Guide as being useful as a tool of management, staff training and awareness, and also as an important due diligence documentation if disorder does take place. A copy of the Guide is available from our office, or from the BBPA.
