In addition, the legislation will sweep away the old and somewhat
unusual loop hole in the law that contracts relating to gambling
were not enforceable through the Courts.
The law will also introduce a new regime for gaming machines.
A new definition of gaming machine is provided, together with
the power to prescribe different categories for different types
of premises.
The overall aims of the Bill are to achieve the three licensing
objectives stated as follows:-
a) Protecting children and other vulnerable persons from being
harmed or exploited by gambling.
b) Preventing gambling from being associated with crime or disorder
or being used to support crime.
c) Ensure gambling is conducted in a fair and open way.
Whether the Bill will remain in its current state or be substantially
amended as it passes through Parliament we will have to wait and
see. Currently it has been referred to the Standing Committee
for further discussion.
