Standardised packaging for tobacco - consultation launched

In a further step to make smoking appear less attractive, the Government has today launched a consultation over whether tobacco products should have standardised packaging. This could lead to the use of a uniform colour, standard font and text for any writing and/or packaging devoid of any branding whatsoever.

This consultation follows hot on the heels of the recent change in the law on 6^th April 2012 requiring all large shops in England to hide tobacco products from public view except in very limited circumstances – see our previous article 'Tobacco display ban'.
