Fake ID - Sheffield 'lead the way'

12 October 2011

Seven hundred under aged have been caught using false ID to try and access pubs and clubs in Sheffield over recent months.

In a joint operation run by the police and city centre pubs and clubs, false ID is seized and handed over to the police; many of those caught are required to attend workshops to seek to educate them about the consequences, with the ultimate possibility of prosecution for fraud.  The scheme has apparently attracted the attention of the Home Office who are looking to roll it out more widely.  Repeat offenders may face prosecution.

Interestingly of the 700 cards seized, over 690 were being carried by those aged 17.

The figures were revealed at the monthly meeting of 'U-night', a grouping of Sheffield bar and club operators who meet the police and other licensing officers monthly to discuss issues of concern - a forum which we are happy to support and attend.
