Scotland - Minimum Pricing, in the Pipeline

02 September 2011

Certain parts of the press have reported that talks are commencing at Holyrood regarding the possible implementation of minimum alcohol pricing in Scotland.

This is a controversial topic but with the Scottish National Party winning a majority of 65/129 at the recent elections this allows (for the first time since devolution) for a single party to push through legislation without consensus.

Unsurprisingly, drinks companies are reported to be concerned by these proposals amid a fear that a minimum pricing law could be on the statute books in Scotland by as early as April 2012.

Although the SNP have this majority it is unlikely that the Holyrood vote will be the end of this argument. Appeals to the Courts will no doubt follow claiming infringement of various competition and European principals.

We shall keep you updated.
